January 13-16, 2009, Baltimore,
Maryland
Some 90 leaders of 43 participating Christian communions and
national Christian organizations gathered in Baltimore for the Third
Annual Meeting of Christian Churches Together in the USA. Joining
the group on Wednesday were 15 seminarians and young leaders from
across the five “families” of churches: Evangelical/Pentecostal,
Historic Protestant, Historic African American, Orthodox, and Roman
Catholic.
The Annual Meeting featured worship led by each of the five
families; prayerful discernment of next steps in the development of
CCT’s domestic poverty initiative; release of
a non-partisan
statement in Washington D.C.; conversation with Congressional
leaders and members of the Obama Administration’s Transition Staff;
and conversation about evangelism in preparation for the 2010 Annual
Meeting.
The non-partisan statement regarding the elimination of domestic
poverty was released in a news conference at the National Press Club
in Washington D.C. CCT believes that Christian leaders, standing
shoulder to shoulder from across the spectrum of theology and
practice is a helpful witness as we seek to keep domestic poverty
front and center on the nation’s agenda and on the agenda of the new
Administration.
In addition to regular participants, there were several observers
present who represented the National Hispanic Christian Leadership
Conference, Coptic Orphans Support Association, Bridge of Hope,
Mission America Coalition and the Seventh Day Adventist General
Conference.
